Your driver takes the E40 towards Brussels, past Aalst, to Groot-Bijgaarden. From there he follows the Ring (R0) round the west side of the capital, then the E19 south past Halle to Nivelles, where the A54 branches off to Charleroi. If traffic is at a standstill around Brussels, he takes another route where possible. The airport lies on the northern edge of Charleroi, at Gosselies, so the final stretch runs through the province of Hainaut.
Low-cost flights often leave at the crack of dawn, and since Charleroi is a fair drive from Ghent, that means a pickup in the middle of the night. The big advantage is that the E40 and the Ring are quiet at that hour. Leaving later? Allow for the morning rush on the E40 towards Brussels and on the western Ring, and choose your pickup time with a generous margin.
Be at the airport two to three hours before departure: low-cost airlines close check-in and bag drop strictly on time.
